Stone Square Lodge No. 22

In 1894, Stone Square Lodge No. 22 was chartered in Middletown, Delaware. The lodge first met in the Rhoades House at the corner of Lake Street and Jefferson. In 1955, after the Louis L. Redding Comprehensive High School was built, the lodge vacated to make room for students.

After several area churches were unable to host them, Mount Calvary Baptist Church, at 300 New Street in Middletown, agreed to let Stone Square Lodge meet in its basement. The brethren took pride in maintaining the building, re-paneling the basement and furnishing a dining area, and supported the church through their rent.

Around 1993, under Worshipful Master Randolph Reed, Senior Warden Abram Watson, Junior Warden Clarence Saunders, Treasurer Walter Boardly Jr., and Acting Secretary Brother William Saunders, the lodge formed a Property Search Committee. In June 1994, Senior Warden Watson and his wife made a down payment at a sheriff’s sale on a property at 208 East Lake Street in Middletown. Brother Ernest Saunders and his wife secured a loan to complete the purchase, which the craft repaid, and in the spring of 1995 the brethren began renovating their new lodge home.
