Star in the East Lodge No. 1

Star in the East Lodge No. 1 traces its origins to the founding of organized Prince Hall Masonry in Delaware. On June 9, 1849, delegates of Union Lodge No. 4, Rising Sun Lodge No. 28, and Meridian Lodge No. 29, then subordinate to the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, assembled in their Masonic Hall on West 5th Street in Wilmington to establish a Grand Lodge in Delaware.

On that day they organized the “Hiram Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Colored Masons of the State of Delaware,” consecrated by Most Worshipful Jacob Jenkins, Grand Master, and Right Worshipful Peter Anderson, Deputy Grand Master, of Pennsylvania. With the founding of the new Grand Lodge, Union Lodge No. 4 became Star in the East Lodge No. 1 , the first lodge of the Delaware jurisdiction. Rising Sun Lodge No. 28 became Rising Sun Lodge No. 4, and Meridian Lodge No. 29 became Meridian Lodge No. 3.

Hiram Grand Lodge was incorporated on September 26, 1911. On December 4, 1944, its certificate of incorporation was amended to “The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Delaware, Inc.”, the name the jurisdiction carries to this day.
